President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen is visiting the Armenian capital Yerevan today, where she was welcomed by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The visit comes after a trip to Baku, Azerbaijan, yesterday,
“It is good to be back in Yerevan so soon,” von der Leyen posted on X. “The recent elections have once again shown the strength of Armenia’s democracy.”
Von der Leyen also said Armenia “was staying the course on reform and moving closer to Europe.”
“So I’m here with a simple message: Armenia can count on us,” the European Commission President said.
On 1 July, in Baku, von der Leyen announced €20 million to support a peace-fostering programme for local populations in both Armenia and Azerbaijan. This funding will support local communities in Armenia and Azerbaijan through peace-fostering investments in healthcare, demining, skills development and local businesses, helping ensure that people experience the tangible benefits of peace in their everyday lives.
The EU will also support transport, energy and digital connectivity projects that will help unlock the economic benefits of lasting peace in the region and will foster cooperation between its people. This commitment builds on the recent launch of the cross-Regional Connectivity Platform and the EU Connectivity for Peace Package of up to €200 million in connectivity projects for the South Caucasus, which has the potential to mobilise up to €2 billion in public and private investment.
