US peace plan for Ukraine ‘require additional work’, says EU and other European and world leaders

The EU and other European and world leaders said that the initial draft of the 28-point peace plan for Ukraine, proposed by US President Donald Trump, includes “important elements that will be essential for a just and lasting peace” but “require additional work”.

This statement was adopted on 22 November at the G20 summit hosted by the South African G20 presidency in Johannesburg. The document was adopted by European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President von der Leyen, Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Fridrich Merz, Prime Minister Micheál Martin, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, joined the statement.

“We are ready to engage in order to ensure that a future peace is sustainable. We are clear on the principle that borders must not be changed by force,” said the leaders . “We are also concerned by the proposed limitations on Ukraine’s armed forces, which would leave Ukraine vulnerable to future attack.”

They also said that the implementation of elements relating to the European Union and NATO would need the consent of EU and NATO members respectively.

Additionally, it was said that they would continue to coordinate peace efforts closely with Ukraine and the US over the coming days.
