Sixth EU-Azerbaijan Security Dialogue takes place in Brussels


On 22 May, the European Union and Azerbaijan held their sixth Security Dialogue meeting in Brussels. 

The meeting was co-chaired by Olof Skoog, Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs at the European External Action Service, and Hikmat Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan.

The participants exchanged views on bilateral relations between the EU and Azerbaijan, including under the EU-Azerbaijan Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, and on current foreign policy and security issues of mutual interest.

The EU and Azerbaijan agreed to continue regular exchanges on foreign and security policy issues including on the potential of deepening cooperation in energy and transport connectivity.  The EU highlighted the importance of Azerbaijan’s reliable gas supply for EU’s energy security. As the host country for COP29, Azerbaijan has emphasised its commitment and ambition to increase the share of renewable energy sources.

Baku expressed its appreciation for the EU’s support for demining efforts by Azerbaijan. The EU highlighted its readiness to explore EU instruments that may contribute to reconstruction works. 

Azerbaijan also reiterated its official request to take part in the European Peace Facility. 

The participants also discussed the next steps in the process of normalisation of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
