EU welcomes release of political prisoners in Belarus, including European diplomatic staffer

On 11 September, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU High Representative Kaja Kallas welcomed the release of political prisoners in Belarus.

Ursula von der Leyen said: “The release of political prisoners in Belarus is welcome news. I’m glad our colleague Mikalai Khilo is among those freed.” She thanked US President Donald Trump for his support, and added that the European Union would continue its work “to free all political prisoners”.

Kaja Kallas expressed her relief at the release of Mikalai Khilo and also thanked the EU’s American partners “for their efforts and engagement in facilitating his release”.

On 11 September, Belarusian authorities released 52 political prisoners in a deal supported by the US government. Mikalai Khilo, a Belarusian member of staff at the EU’s mission to Minsk, had been sentenced in January to four years in a penal colony.
