Azerbaijan: EU concern at sentencing of journalists and political activists

The European Union has called on Azerbaijan to take immediate steps to ensure a safe environment for all journalists, describing the heavy prison sentences imposed on Abzas Media journalists and staff as a worrying development.

“Independent journalism plays a vital role in upholding transparency, accountability, and informed public discourse,” the EU said in a statement on 23 June.

“The European Union calls on Azerbaijan to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms, uphold its international obligations, and take immediate steps to ensure a safe and enabling environment for all journalists and media workers,” the statement added, concluding that the EU remained committed to continue its dialogue and cooperation on human rights with Azerbaijan.
