War in Ukraine: EU launches special page dedicated to Food security and affordability

The European Council has launched on its website a special page dedicated to Food security and affordability.

The new page provides information on what triggers the food crisis, who is affected the most and how the EU is responding to it. The EU says 47 million people could face severe food insecurity in 2022.

The resource explains how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has further exacerbated the global food crisis. Not only the hostilities in Ukraine, but Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea is hurting agriculture and grain imports.

At the same time, it is stressed that the sanctions the EU has adopted against Russia do not affect agriculture and the food sector and are therefore not responsible for the food security crisis.
