Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi visits Ukraine to reaffirm EU’s strong support to Ukraine

On 26-27 January, the Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, visited Kyiv to reaffirm the EU’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and to support its socio-economic resilience.

This visit follows the announcement of a new financial assistance package for Ukraine, by President von der Leyen.

“We will continue to invest in the country’s future through the Economic and Investment Plan for the Eastern Partnership. Through this Plan we aim to leverage for Ukraine up to €6.5 billion in investments to support the socio-economic recovery and development in the next years,” said Commissioner Várhelyi in Kyiv. 

The Commissioner held bilateral meetings with President Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Shmyhal and other high officials, representatives of civil society and national minorities. He also participated in a meeting of the Ukrainian Government’s Coordination Commission for the Implementation of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and took part in the launch of the Natolin4Capacity Building project.

Várhelyi’s trip also included a visit to the Memorial Wall dedicated to the victims of the Revolution of Dignity and conflict in eastern Ukraine, as well as to the Babyn Yar memorial site to commemorate the Holocaust.
