MEMORIES OF HOME

In September 2021, armed men broke into my family's house. My dad was arrested for taking part in the protests that started in Belarus in 2020 after the falsified presidential elections. They conducted a search and took away property. We stayed in the country for another month trying to get my dad out of jail, and this series was born during that month. Now, these are the only memories of the house to which I cannot return. Now, more than ever, the theme of the family is relevant, because this is the only island of safety in a difficult world. Let everyone who looks at these photos hug their relatives if such an opportunity still exists. They should always know that they are always there, in our hearts. This invisible connection should become a support for us.

About Veranika Maliauka

Veranika Maliauka was born in a small village in Belarus. She entered the Belarusian State Academy of Arts, specialising in design. After two years, she decided to leave the academy and start her adventure with photography. She has been working as a photographer for six years. "I want to show people that beauty is in completely simple things, that it does not need a bright wrapper,” Veranika says. She left Belarus for political reasons and since January 2022 she has been living in Poland. Now she works part-time as a taxi driver and is looking for herself in a new place.
