EU leaders condemn Bucha massacre and say more sanctions on their way

EU leaders have expressed their shock at atrocities committed by Russian forces in Bucha and other recently liberated areas of Ukraine, warning further sanctions were on their way.

“Shocked by haunting images of atrocities committed by Russian army in Kyiv liberated region #BuchaMassacre,” President of the European Council Charles Michel said on Twitter.

He added the EU was assisting Ukraine and NGOs in gathering evidence for pursuit in international courts.

“Further EU sanctions and support are on their way,” he added.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she was appalled by “reports of unspeakable horrors in areas from which Russia is withdrawing”, adding “perpetrators of war crimes will be held accountable”.

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, who travelled to Kyiv on Firday, said she was appalled by the atrocities: “This is cold reality of Putin’s war crimes,” she tweeted. “Tougher sanctions must be imposed. Perpetrators and their commanders must be brought to justice.”
