The first step on your European path: EU hands over application questionnaire to Georgia

European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi today handed over the questionnaire on EU application to Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili, on the sidelines of the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg, following Georgia’s recent application for EU membership.

Handing over the questionnaire, which assesses the political and economic conditions in Georgia, the Commissioner said: This is the first step on your European path. We are ready to work with you very fast to deliver the opinion to the European Council as requested.

A further questionnaire will follow later this week, assessing Georgia’s compliance with EU law, the aquis communautaire.

On the basis of the answers to the questionnaire, the European Commission will start to prepare an opinion on Georgia’s EU application.

Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine have all applied for membership of the European Union. CommissionerVarhelyi also handed over the questionnaire to the Moldovan Foreign Minister today, while Commission President Ursula von der Leyen handed over the questionnaire to Ukraine in Kyiv on Friday. All three countries already have Association Agreements with the European Union.
