Team Europe: Portugal donates more than 400,000 BioNTech–Pfizer vaccines to Armenia

On 21 March, Portugal delivered the first shipment of 400,140 doses of BioNTech–Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines to Armenia.

The delivery is part of a Team Europe Initiative for the Eastern Partnership, setting up an innovative EU-financed vaccine-sharing programme launched in December 2021, coordinated by Poland and Portugal.

This shipment is the first batch of vaccines delivered to Armenia under the new EU-funded scheme, with a second one arriving in Armenia in April.

“These vaccines reach Armenia at a critical time and should help in increasing the vaccine uptake in the country. The delivery is an expression of solidarity with Armenia in the common battle against the pandemic and its social and economic consequences,” said EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi.

In December 2021, the European Commission signed a €35 million agreement with BGK, the Polish Development Bank, to create an innovative mechanism to support EU Member States in supplying COVID-19 vaccines to Eastern Partnership countries.
