Supporting a gender-sensitive education sector in Armenia during crises

A round table discussion in Armenia on 29 November 2023 shed light on gendered crises facing the displaced population from Nagorno Karabakh, including the plight of displaced teachers (predominantly women) and the integration of male and female students in local educational and academic institutions. The event was organised by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Armenia, with the support of the EU-funded EU4Gender Equality Reform Helpdesk.

Armenia’s Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, Zhanna Andreasyan, delivered the meeting’s opening remarks. Participants – including representatives of educational, scientific, cultural and sports-related state agencies, local civil society organisations (CSOs), and Reform Helpdesk Expert Gohar Shahnazaryan – discussed the multifaceted challenges facing both the Ministry of Education and experts in the field of education.

The meeting marks the beginning of closer cooperation between the EU4Gender Equality Reform Helpdesk and Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, as part of the Helpdesk’s support for Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries – including Armenia – to advance gender equality. The Reform Helpdesk project, funded by the European Union and implemented by Niras, aims to ensure effective and equal results for women and men across EaP countries by expanding the use of gender analysis in decision-making and reforms.
