EU and Moldova hold annual Human Rights Dialogue in Brussels

On 19 October, the European Union and the Republic of Moldova held the thirteenth round of their annual Human Rights Dialogue in Brussels.

Discussions ranged from key developments in EU human rights policy to the implementation of Moldova’s national policies on human rights, elections and electoral system, media freedom and pluralism, anti-discrimination and labour rights.

The EU welcomed positive developments in Moldova such as the ratification of the Istanbul Convention on preventing and combating violence against women, the adoption of hate crime legislation, the ongoing work to reform the Electoral Code as well as the adoption of the new Child Protection Programme and Action Plan 2022-2026.

Special attention was given to the need for further reform of the media environment, in particular to address the concentration of media ownership and lack of transparency.

The EU also called on Moldova to bring detention conditions in line with international standards and to thoroughly investigate and prosecute as well as effectively punish any acts of ill-treatment and torture in places of detention.

The next Human Rights Dialogue between the EU and Moldova is scheduled to take place in Chisinau in 2023.
