European Political Community meets for the first time in Prague to discuss energy and security

On 6 October 2022, the first ever meeting of a broader format of European countries, the so-called European Political Community (EPC), took place in the Czech capital Prague.

More than 40 leaders of European countries, including the presidents of Azerbaijan and Moldova and the Prime Ministers of Armenia and Georgia, debated energy, security, climate and the economic situation in Europe. The plenary session was also joined by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy via a video call.

The European Political Community was created with the aim of promoting political dialogue and strengthening the security and stability of the European continent.

“We see the EPC as a platform built on the basis of common solidarity and trust. Our goal is to act together so that there is lasting peace and international law is respected. We must continue to support Ukraine in its struggle for sovereignty and together we condemn Russia’s aggression against it and illegal annexations,” said Maia Sandu, President of Moldova.

“This platform for political coordination does not replace any existing organisation, structure or process and does not aim to create new ones at this stage,” clarifies a press release by the Council of the European Union.

The general meeting was followed by dozens of bilateral meetings to improve mutual understanding between states and establish a constructive dialogue to address the most pressing issues of the day.

The future direction of the platform was also discussed. It was decided that the next meeting of the European Political Community would take place in Moldova.
