Ukraine: EU moves to unlock extra support under home affairs funds – up to €420 million
On 16 March, EU ambassadors agreed a Council negotiating mandate for a proposal to amend the 2014-2020 Home Affairs Fund and the 2021-2027 Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund. The amendment, put forward as part of the fast-track process, would provide additional resources to receive people fleeing war in Ukraine.
The proposed text would extend the 2014-2020 internal affairs funds by one year and unlock access to unspent asylum and migration funds previously earmarked for other purposes. This will allow Member States to urgently use the remaining funds to address the massive influx of people fleeing war. This is expected to free up some €420 million in additional support from unused funds.
