Life at War: Ukraine’s Young European Ambassadors learning to live with the fear of death

On February 24, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. More than a month later, Russian attacks on military and civilian infrastructure continue across the country, with reports of new atrocities emerging every day. Today, we publish the first in a trilogy of reports, telling the personal stories of Ukrainian Ukrainian Young European Ambassadors (YEAs) whose lives have been disrupted by the war.

Today’s story features Nazar, Yuliia, and Serhii, Ukrainian YEAs who stayed in their homes on the front line in Kharkiv and Chernihiv, interviewed during the third week of March. They speak of their emotions, of everyday life under the bombs, of learning to live with the fear of death.

In the second part, we will talk to those who sought shelter from the bombardment in the ‘safer’ Western regions of Ukraine. The third part will focus on finding refugees in neighbouring countries and looking at the challenges they face.
