EU looks to ease requirements for Ukrainian drivers

June 22, 2022

The European Commission has proposed to allow Ukrainian citizens residing in the EU under the temporary protection regime to continue using their Ukrainian driving licence.

Under the new rules proposed by the Commission, refugees from Ukraine would not need to exchange their licences for an EU driving licence or take a new driving test.

The measure will also ease the requirements for professional drivers.

Ukrainian lorry drivers are at the forefront of transporting goods to and from Ukraine, including grain. We need to ensure that they can continue their work without having to go through lengthy administrative procedures regarding their driving documents,” said European Commissioner for Transport Adina Vălean.

Under certain conditions, Ukrainian truck and bus drivers benefiting from temporary protection will be able to renew their certificates of professional competence issued to them in Ukraine after passing a short training course and test. This would allow them to work in the EU during the period of temporary protection and help export Ukrainian goods. This proposal will now be considered by the European Parliament and Council.
