Charles Michel at European Parliament: Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia’s future lies within EU

On 6 July, European Council President Charles Michel reported on the results of the June European Council to the European Parliament, including granting candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova.

He also reaffirmed the European perspective of Georgia and the Western Balkans, and stressed the need to re-energise the EU enlargement process.

Michel said that the EU will continue to support Ukraine “as long as it takes”. “We will continue to provide military support — we have already done a lot, but Ukraine needs more: so we called for the increase of military support for Ukraine.”

As for financial support, he said the Council expects the European Commission to soon present a proposal for up to €9 billion of new macro-financial assistance to Ukraine in 2022.

He added that the EU will continue to work on sanctions, to make sure they are all implemented effectively and to prevent their circumvention as far as possible.

In close coordination with our G7 partners — we were in Germany, a few days ago — we will consider sanctions on gold. We will also explore measures, such as price caps, to secure energy supply and to try to reduce price surges,” said Michel.
