EU Twinning project supports course on economic competition for Ukrainian students

Law and economics students from four Ukrainian universities are being offered a course developed with the support of the EU, which will help them understand the most important issues in protection of economic competition, and learn about international best practices and high-profile cases in Ukraine.

The course, which began on 15 February, is being offered by the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine (AMCU), and was developed with the support of an EU Twinning project, implemented by the competition authorities of Lithuania, Germany and Romania. It is open to students from Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University (Faculty of Economics and International Relations Institute), Kyiv School of Economics, Kyiv National University of Trade and Economics, and Lviv Polytechnic University.

“Strengthening of economic competition is among the priorities of the Association Agreement and of the cooperation between the EU and Ukraine,” said Chloé Allio, Head of the Economic Cooperation, Energy, Infrastructure and Environment section at the European Union Delegation to Ukraine.

The course will be delivered online, jointly with experts from the US Federal Trade Commission. The lectures will cover topics such as functions and objectives of antitrust authorities in the European Union and USA, abuse of dominance (and its types), unfair competition, mergers and acquisitions, and competition advocacy.

“The purpose of this project is to expand the circle of young professionals who understand economic competition, encourage them to study the best international experience and show how the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine protects competition,” said Olga Pishchanska, Chair of the AMCU. “Of course, we expect that students will at least try to come to the AMCU for an internship, and at most to join our team in the future.”

Following the completion of the course and assessment of its results, more programmes may be developed and offered to a wider range of Ukrainian universities.

The EU Twinning project ‘Enforcement and Legal Support to the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine’ aims to support further alignment of the Ukrainian economic competition legislation with the EU competition laws and strengthen the institutional capacity of AMCU.
