‘The political dialogue in Georgia is re-launched’ – President Charles Michel meets Prime Minister Garibashvili and opposition representatives

The President of the European Council Charles Michel has proposed the support of the EU in order to encourage all the positive efforts to tackle the political crisis in Georgia. On 1 March, he met Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and the representatives of opposition political parties in Tbilisi. The visit was part of a tour to the Republic of Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine from 28 February to 3 March.

“The political dialogue in Georgia is re-launched tonight,” said President Michel. “We had a very important meeting with the leaders of the political parties in the opposition and with the Prime Minister. We had the opportunity to listen to each other. And we understand that there are many difficult topics that need to be tackled by the political actors.”

Charles Michel reminded that in two weeks in Brussels will take place the next Association Council with Georgia. It will be a rendez-vous in order to observe what progress has been made on the different difficult topics. But the main message is the following: what counts for the EU is the protection of the interests of the Georgian citizens,” said the President.

He added that the political crisis should be solved urgently to tackle the challenges in the economic development, social cohesion, COVID-19, security, and stability.

Earlier, Michel met Georgian President Salome Zourabishvili and stressed the European Union’s message of support, saying his visit underlined the EU’s commitment to the partnership with all the countries of the region.
