‘It is a truly European way of resolving the crisis’ – Charles Michel leads the signing of the long-awaited political agreement in Georgia

On 19 April, after four months of facilitation talks and two months of mediations works under the supervision of President of the European Council Charles Michel, the representatives of Georgian political parties signed an agreement. The document, proposed by Charles Michel on 18 April, aims to resolve the political conflict in Georgia.

Leading the ceremony online, President Michel thanked President of Georgia Salome Zourabishvili for sharing her advice, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili for his vision, political leaders and elected members of opposition parties for their courageous political choices, as well as EU special envoy Christian Danielsson, Head of the EU Delegation to Georgia Ambassador Hartzell and Ambassador of the USA Kelly Degnan for their efforts.

“This agreement is not the finish line. This agreement is the starting point for your work towards consolidating Georgia’s democracy and taking Georgia forward on its Euro-Atlantic future,” said Charles Michel. “More than ever, I am convinced Georgian citizens count on you to focus on the pressing challenges Georgia is facing – the economy, the COVID-19 pandemic and its fallout, reforms in the rule of law sphere and the judiciary, as well as the regional challenges.”

President Michel also reminded about the Nagorno-Karabakh war last year and the Russian military build-up along Ukraine’s borders and in illegally-annexed Crimea, and noted that the way Georgian political leaders have addressed the stalemate is particularly important in this regional context: “It is a truly European way of resolving the crisis”.
