UNDP and EIB equip a new air-raid shelter in Odesa

A renovated bomb shelter for 500 people has opened in Odesa. The shelter was renovated and refurbished by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine with financial support from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and in partnership with the Odesa city council.

The city, which shelters more than 85,000 internally displaced people from southern and eastern Ukraine, is a frequent target of missiles and drones. Most shelters are building basements and underground car parks. They often lack additional evacuation exits, drinking water supplies and drainage systems, and are not adapted for long-term storage of food and water.

The renovation work included the installation of an air ventilation system using electrostatic and charcoal filtration, the replacement of all life-support systems (electricity, sewage and water supply) and the fitting out of furniture such as beds.
