Ukraine: new EU4ResilientRegions programme to boost local development in up to 80 communities

On 16 June, the European Union, together with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), launched the ‘EU4ResilientRegions – Special Assistance Programme Ukraine’. The project is worth €10 million and will support local communities, notably in eastern and southern Ukraine.

“This new programme … is a result of the European Union’s constant drive to support Ukraine in the face of the hybrid challenges it faces. Our joint aim is to help make eastern and southern Ukraine strong, resilient and flourishing,” said Frederik Coene, Head of Cooperation at the European Union Delegation to Ukraine.

The best practices in improving local service provisions already implemented in Donetsk and Luhansk regions during the previous phase of the programme, will be extended into selected municipalities in the Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions. Until October 2023, the programme will help up to 80 communities to make sure residents can access local administrative, medical, and social services comfortably and efficiently.

In Kherson region, the programme will improve crossing points at the administrative boundary line with Crimea to ensure that Ukrainians – despite the illegal annexation by Russia –  can cross into the peninsula more comfortably, so that human ties are not lost.

The ‘EU4ResilientRegions – Special Assistance Programme Ukraine’ is part of a €30 million European Union action focusing on resilience-building towards hybrid threats as well as overcoming the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
