Ukraine: EU welcomes establishment of Ethics Council to the High Council of Justice

The European Union, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and other international partners supporting judicial reforms in Ukraine have welcomed the establishment on 9 November of the Ethics Council to the High Council of Justice.

Working within the Judicial Reform Strategy, the Ethics Council will review the integrity of the members of the High Council of Justice – the highest judicial governance body in Ukraine.

According to the joint statement released by Ukraine’s International partners, three international experts – two retired high-ranking judges from the USA and the UK and a former General Prosecutor of Estonia – will work together with three Ukrainian judges on the Ethics Council. These experts will promote judicial integrity, a key demand of Ukrainian citizens and both the Ukrainian and international business community.
