Team Europe launches Mine Action in Azerbaijan

On 3 May, the Team Europe Initiative on Mine Action in Azerbaijan kicked off in Baku.

The initiative was launched with the participation of Gert Jan Koopman, Director General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations of the European Commission, who visited the South Caucasus last week.

The ceremony was also attended by European Union Ambassador to Azerbaijan Peter Michalko, and Heads of Missions of EU Member States.

The Azerbaijani side was represented by Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to Azerbaijan’s President and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Vugar Suleymanov, Chairman of the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA).

“The EU and its Member States are the largest international donors in mine action in Azerbaijan,” said a Facebook post by the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan. “This initiative aims to strengthen the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA), raise mine awareness, and support victims. Clearing explosive hazards will facilitate the safe return of internally displaced persons and promote sustainable communities.”
