Moldova: Lyceum and water and sewage system repaired in Ungheni with EU support

The inauguration of the renovated Mihai Eminescu Theoretical Lyceum in Ungheni municipality, Moldova, took place on 9 November.

With EU support, the school has become more energy efficient and comfortable for some 1,200 pupils and over 100 teachers.

The institution now has renovated classrooms, new sanitary facilities, a more modern canteen and gym. The lyceum building has also been insulated and equipped with 32 photovoltaic panels and a highly efficient ventilation system.

The EU has allocated about €2.9 million for the renovation and energy efficiency work of the lyceum.

In addition, a 20 km long section of the water supply and sewerage system in Ungheni was repaired as a part of an EU-funded energy efficiency project.

“In the crisis we are facing, identifying alternative sources and increasing the energy efficiency of public buildings will help us reduce energy consumption and thus reduce costs,” said Andrei Spinu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova.
