The European Union is to help bolster Moldova’s security and defence in the face of the Russian military aggression against Ukraine.
During his two-day visit to Moldova with European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, EU High Representative Josep Borrell said the EU would support Moldova in strengthening its cyber security.
“An expert mission is here already, in Chisinau, to assess the needs and identify concrete support measures that can be implemented at very short notice,” said Borrell.
The EU will also use its European Peace Facility to provide the Moldovan armed forces with medical equipment and support in case of crisis.
Borrell also said the EU would assist Moldova in tackling the disinformation that “has become a fully-fledged war and this has become an active component of what has happened in Ukraine”.
Concerning the Transnistrian conflict settlement process, Borrell said the EU Delegation and Moldovan government had agreed to hold a high-level political and security dialogue in a couple of weeks to take stock on these points further.
He also said that the EU was currently looking at supporting energy security in Moldova and bringing the country towards the EU electricity grid: “We hope to have an assessment by the European network (ENSTO-E) quickly.”
