Moldova: entrepreneurs from Cahul and Ungheni regions develop their business with EU assistance

Almost 30 entrepreneurs from the Cahul and Ungheni regions will benefit from €700,000 worth of grants provided by the European Union for the development of the private sector in the focal regions. The entrepreneurs took part in an open competition by the ‘EU4Moldova: Focal Regions’ Programme, and were selected from 140 applications received.

Sixteen existing companies, ten start-ups and two social entrepreneurship initiatives will receive grants of €15,000 – €30,000 each. Financial assistance will be used to purchase equipment, goods, works and services to grow the business, create new jobs and increase the attractiveness of the focal regions for new investments. The grant programme will be accompanied by free mentoring and training activities to stimulate the entrepreneurial culture of the focal regions.

The beneficiaries of the private sector support programme cover a wide range of economic activity, including furniture production, tailoring, pastry making, decorative objects, construction materials, agriculture, and beekeeping. The grants programme beneficiaries will create more than 200 new seasonal and permanent jobs in both focal regions.

This year, a new call for grants will be launched for entrepreneurs from Ungheni and Cahul districts. The total value of grants for private sector support in the Cahul and Ungheni regions that will be offered in the period 2020-2024 in the framework of the programme is about €1.7 million.

The EU4Moldova: Focal Regions Programme (2019-2024) supports smart, green, inclusive and sustainable development in Cahul and Ungheni, to ensure a better quality of life for citizens. The programme has a total budget of €23 million and is financed by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
