The EU has responded strongly to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, demonstrating its unambiguous commitment to defend democracy, in the European Union and beyond.
In their joint statement on the International Day of Democracy, EU High Representative Borrell and European Commission Vice-President Dubravka Šuica noted that despite threats to democracy, EU citizens have been able to prove their commitment to the values and ideals that underpin democratic societies.
They reminded that the EU also supports its partners around the world: “We stand with all the courageous people around the world who fight for their civil liberties on a daily basis, for human rights, for the rule of law, for free and independent media, often at great personal risk.”
Noting that 2022 is also the European Year of Youth, Borrell and Šuica said the EU aims to empower young people to inspire positive change and shape and guide the future of democracy everywhere.
