Greening Kramatorsk: eco-activities in eastern Ukraine for World Environment Day

During the first week of June, a set of educational and environmental activities supported by the EU got underway in cities in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, with the aim of engaging citizens in initiatives to preserve the environment.

To mark World Environment Day, a park area called Commonwealth Square has been set up in Kramatorsk city centre, and 20 maple trees were planted.

According to the Director of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of Donetsk Oblast State Administration, Serhii Natrus, planting trees is a significant step in rebuilding and expanding the network of green zones of Donetsk Oblast, which is one of the most polluted and urbanised regions in Ukraine. 

The establishment of the green zones in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts cost US $12,719 (approximately UAH 351,000) and was carried out under the UN Recovery and Peacebuilding Programme, financed among others by the EU and the EIB.
