Georgia: EU-funded project on biomass energy among best practices contest winners

A project on biomass energy, funded under the EU’s ‘Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects’ (CoM-DeP), is among the nine winners of the 2019-2020 Best Practices contest for municipalities, organised under the EU-supported project ‘Networking for Efficiency and Development’ (N4ED).

The project ‘Biomass Energy and Energy Efficient Technologies as Sustainable Energy Solutions for Covenant of Mayors signatories in Georgia’ is co-financed by the Telavi Municipality City Hall and implemented by the Energy Efficiency Centre, the Covenant of Mayors’ partner in Georgia.

The project will carry out the complete thermal modernisation of two kindergartens in Telavi municipality, installing renewable energy sources and energy efficient technologies, as well as constructing modern autonomous biomass heating systems. A biomass (vine prunings) supply chain will be established using innovative technologies to replace imported natural gas and unsustainably harvested fuel wood. The project will assist the municipality with fulfilling its commitments under the Covenant of Mayors on the reduction of CO2 emissions on its territory.
