European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement visits Armenia

On 9 July, the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, visited Armenia as part of his tour of the South Caucasus, his first mission to countries of the Eastern Partnership.

The Commissioner met with acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian to discuss the recently adopted Economic and Investment Plan for the Eastern Partnership. The Plan includes five flagship initiatives for Armenia, including in connectivity, resilience of Southern provinces, energy efficiency and renewable energy, digital transformation and loans to businesses, which will significantly contribute to the economic recovery of Armenia. The EU will also continue to be a key partner for the country in implementation of reforms that are essential for the people and would lead to good governance, democracy and the rule of law.

The same day, Olivér Várhelyi met with the Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. The Commissioner presented the goals of his visit to Armenia, the humanitarian aid provided to Armenia through various programmes to date and the future EU-Armenia cooperation.
