EU supports Moldovan labour inspectors to enhance equal opportunities for women and men

Labour inspectors in Moldova are better equipped to make decent work a reality for women and men thanks to the support of the EU-funded EU4Gender Equality: Reform Helpdesk.

“I will be able to explain to employees their rights and take measures to protect the labour rights of employees […and] I will be able to promote international standards in this area in order to eliminate gender stereotypes,” said Ivan Komur, after participating in an online training course organised by the Reform Helpdesk.

The training on “Decent working conditions and a safe working environment: Non-discrimination and gender equality” (28–29 June 2022) improved 58 Moldovan labour inspectors’ knowledge and practical skills on ensuring decent working conditions, safe working environments, non-discrimination and equal opportunities for men and women nationwide – all based on the principles of gender equality.

The training is part and parcel of the EU4Gender Equality Reform Helpdesk’s support for mainstreaming gender in labour inspection in Moldova, in collaboration with the State Labour Inspectorate. Other milestones include a round table discussion on “Non-discrimination and gender equality at the working place” (30 May 2022). Bringing together key stakeholders across the country – including the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Republic of Moldova, the State Labour Inspectorate, the National Trade Union Confederation, the National Confederation of Employers, as well as guests from the Swedish Gender Equality Agency and the Swedish Work Environment Authority – the discussion explored how to advance equal opportunities and decent work for all. The Helpdesk is also supporting the development of an analytical paper on aligning national legislation with EU and international ILO standards – an issue at the heart of the two-day training course.

“All aspects of the training were useful,” said participant Aliona Cristea, “in particular the correlation of national legislation […with] non-discrimination and gender equality-related international and European standards.”

The EU4GenderEquality: Reform Helpdesk project, funded by the European Union and implemented by Niras, aims to ensure effective and equal results for women and men across Eastern Partnership countries – including Moldova – by expanding the use of gender analysis in decision-making and reforms.
