On 16 April, Ukraine received 117,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine through the EU-supported COVAX Facility, together with the necessary materials for safe vaccination.
This first batch of vaccines is primarily intended for staff and residents of nursing homes (specialised geriatric facilities) and then for the employees of the State Emergency Service and State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. Further shipments of the vaccines are expected to come to Ukraine in the coming months through the COVAX Facility.
“Team Europe continues to support Ukraine in its fight against COVID-19. The European Union, together with the World Health Organisation, are closely working with the Ministry of Health and other partners since the beginning of the pandemic and will be doing so until the end of this crisis. No one is safe until everyone is safe”, said Ambassador Matti Maasikas, Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine.
The European Union is one of the biggest supporters of COVAX, a global collaboration to accelerate the development, production, and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines. The EU’s Team Europe (which combines resources from the EU, its Member States and European financial institutions) supports COVAX with more than €2.2 billion, including €1 billion from the EU budget.
