EU and UNDP study: What do the social entrepreneurs say about the ecosystem in Azerbaijan?

The European Union and UNDP conducted a survey among social entrepreneurs in Azerbaijan to better understand the profile of social enterprises, their most challenging problems and the types of support needed in the future.

The study was developed as part of the EU-funded ‘Developing innovation-driven and sustainable civil society in Azerbaijan’ project, implemented by UNDP.

A survey was conducted among social entrepreneurs working in different areas, such as promoting healthy lifestyles and well-being, supporting employment of rural women and people with different abilities, improving educational opportunities for young people and providing environmental services.

The results from the 25 respondents show that most of these businesses are established in Baku and sell their goods and services locally. Most of these businesses have small and gender-balanced teams of 5-10 people.

These social enterprises encompass start-ups and digital businesses alongside traditional businesses and focus on tackling welfare, employment and decent work, meeting the needs of people with disabilities, as well as sustainable production issues.

The project also runs a series of workshops for social entrepreneurs. The series will continue in September 2022.
