EU and UNDP open IT Solution Centres for communities in eastern Ukraine

On 5 April, two pilot IT Solutions Centres in Kramatorsk, Donetsk oblast, and Sievierodonetsk, Luhansk oblast, aiming to strengthen local government by using modern approaches and tools of e-government, were opened by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine with EU support.

The centres are based at the Donbas State Engineering Academy and the East Ukrainian Volodymyr Dahl National University. They have been overhauled and equipped with furniture and equipment at a total cost of US$72,000 under the UN Recovery and Peacebuilding Programme, with the financial support of the European Union.

“Two IT Solutions Centres … will set up a learning platform for IT developers and users to benefit local communities and further support the digitalisation of services,” said Martin Schroeder, the Head of the Local and Human Development Section at the EU Delegation to Ukraine. “The EU is also supporting ten projects with displaced universities, reinforcing their capacity and helping them maintain competitive positions and quality of academic services.”

The Centres will also serve as a platform for expanding cooperation between higher education institutions for IT professionals, provide students with internships, and implement an effective exchange mechanism between state and local governments, the public, and the media to respond quickly to community needs.
