‘We are one European family’: European Commission President expresses solidarity with Ukraine during COVID at ‘Ukraine-30’ Forum

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen yesterday expressed EU solidarity with Ukraine and called for unity within the European family in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic at the all-Ukrainian forum celebrating 30 years of Ukraine’s independence.

Since early 2020, the EU has mobilised over €190 million to help Ukraine face the challenges of COVID-19, the President said in her video message. The European Union is also providing emergency Macro-Financial Assistance worth €1.2 billion to Ukraine to help limit the economic fallout of the pandemic.

Finally, the COVAX initiative, to which the European Union is the largest donor, is set to provide the first batches of vaccines to Ukrainian frontline workers shortly: Thanks to COVAX Ukrainian doctors and nurses will receive the first vaccines already this month. Millions of other doses will reach Ukraine by the summer,Ursula von der Leyen said. “But of top of COVAX I have asked our member States to donate part of their doses to Ukraine.”

The European Union has also activated its Civil Protection Mechanism to transfer medical equipment and supplies from the Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland and Slovakia to Ukraine.
