Ukraine: EU support to step up energy efficiency in public buildings

The European Union will provide a €5.2 million grant from the EU Neighbourhood Investment Platform to contribute to the greater energy efficiency of public buildings in Ukraine. Implementation is expected to start in the coming weeks.

This grant supports improved energy efficiency as part of one of the five flagship initiatives of the European Union’s Economic and Investment Plan for Ukraine.

This funding will facilitate the proper implementation of a €300 million EIB framework loan to increase energy efficiency in 1,000 public buildings, including hospitals, schools, cultural centres, and kindergartens. The project is expected to support many small and medium-sized municipalities and hromadas (local communities) in Ukraine and to benefit 2.5 million people.

The Ukrainian healthcare sector will directly benefit from this support provided by the EU. Upgrades will be made, with new cooling systems and the integration of renewable energy sources, and modern equipment will be installed in buildings. This will extend the operational life of key social, healthcare, administrative and cultural facilities by at least 20 years and reduce CO2 emissions by 1.25 million tonnes.
