Start life anew: EU in Azerbaijan shares stories highlighting reintegration of ex-prisoners

This week, the Delegation of the European Union to Azerbaijan launched a campaign of success stories of ex-prisoners who had benefited from the EU-funded project for ‘Further Support for Penitentiary Reform in Azerbaijan’.

The project, completed in October 2021, has contributed to reintegration of ex-prisoners into society. Thanks to the activity, 122 people improved their professional skills, 11 of them were provided with jobs, 16 were engaged in entrepreneurial activities, 342 people received legal assistance, and 398 people received psycho-social support.

The success stories display how ex-prisoners, supported by ‘Uluchay’, one of three civil society organisations involved in the project, are rebuilding a normal life.

For example, the project advised Nusrat to return to his old profession, animal husbandry, and develop it. By getting five sheep for free from the project, Nusrat was able to expand his farm.
