Moldova: EU allocates €100,000 to Cahul and Ungheni for immediate response to Ukrainian refugees

The European Union has provided €100,000 to support the local authorities of Cahul and Ungheni to immediately respond to the needs of refugees from Ukraine arriving in the Republic of Moldova. These funds are allocated within the EU-funded ‘EU4Moldova: Focal Regions’ programme implemented by UNDP and UNICEF.

A batch of humanitarian aid was delivered to the temporary accommodation centres from Cahul and Ungheni: household appliances, light generators, electric heaters, electric air heaters and lanterns. In the coming days, 300 beds, 350 mattresses, 700 sets of bed linen, duvet covers, and towels will be delivered.

The hospitality of the host communities of Cahul and Ungheni is remarkable, welcoming refugees and accommodating them with dignity,” said Dima Al-Khatib, UNDP Resident Representative to the Republic of Moldova. “Further, we will facilitate the socio-economic integration and inclusion of refugees through access to employment opportunities and public services as well as ensuring social cohesion in host communities.”

In Cahul and Ungheni regions, there are 24 temporary shelters, with a total capacity of over 1,000 places for hosting refugees.

The ‘EU4Moldova: Focal Regions’ programme (2019-2024), with a total budget of €23 million, supports smart, inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development in Cahul and Ungheni regions, in order to ensure a better quality of life for citizens.
