On 18 January, Ambassador Dirk Schuebel, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Belarus, met with H.E. Sergei Aleinik, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, who was recently assigned the EU-Belarus relations portfolio.

With reference to the Conclusions on Belarus adopted by the Council of the European Union of 12 October 2020, the Ambassador stressed the need for the Belarusian authorities to release all arbitrarily imprisoned persons, including political prisoners and media workers.

The Ambassador also renewed the EU diplomatic community’s earlier requests for access to penitentiary facilities, including with a view to visit Mr Ihar Losik. The blogger is imprisoned since 25 June 2020 and has been on hunger strike for the past 34 days.
