EU supports gender equality in Georgia

The EU-funded EU4Gender Equality Reform Helpdesk is conducting a needs assessment of various state institutions in Georgia with the aim of jointly identifying how gender equality can be further addressed in ongoing reform work. The aim is to agree on a Joint Engagement Plan, covering the support the Helpdesk may provide the government for the advancement on gender equality.

As part of this effort, the Helpdesk last month held a series of meetings with the Adviser on Human Rights of the Prime Minister of Georgia, who also chairs an Inter-Agency Commission for Gender Equality, Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, with the Chair of the Gender Equality Council in the Parliament of Georgia – a permanent body leading the integration of gender aspects within the legislation – and with the Public Ombudsman’s Office of Georgia.

At the same time, the project met with ten international organisations supporting State agencies in the implementation of gender equality agenda in Georgia (UN Women, UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, FAO, Council of Europe, IFES National Democratic Institute, International Republican Institute, East-West Management Institute). The objective of these meetings was to identify possible areas of cooperation to strengthen support to state agencies in advancing gender equality and women’s rights.

The EU-funded EU4Gender Equality Reform Helpdesk, provides gender analysis and expert advice on gender equality to the six Eastern partner countries. The aim of the project is to increase gender equality through the use of gender analysis in decision-making, reforms, policies and programmes.
