EU is ready to continue working with the Belarusian people despite Lukashenko’s regime decision – EU senior officials

On 28 June, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus announced that Belarus suspends its participation in the Eastern Partnership.

Reacting to this decision, President of the European Council, Charles Michel, wrote in his Twitter: Belarus has taken another step backwards today by suspending its participation in the Eastern Partnership. This will escalate tensions further and have a clear negative impact on the people of Belarus by depriving them of opportunities provided by our cooperation.”

He also addressed to the people of Belarus: “You can count on the EU. We stand by you in solidarity and with practical support. We recall your right to elect your president through new, free and fair elections. To the regime of president Lukashenka: put the future of Belarus first.”

The EU High Representative, Josep Borrell also said in his Twitter that “despite the decision by the Lukashenko regime to suspend Belarus participation in the Eastern Partnership, we are ready to continue working with the Belarusian people to strengthen the bonds, foster regional cooperation and tackle joint challenges.”
