EU helps deliver 140 tonnes of buckwheat seeds to Ukraine from Canada

With the support of the European Union and the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the Mills of Ukraine Union was able to deliver 140 tonnes of buckwheat seeds from Canada to Ukraine.

The project, implemented under the auspices of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, is aimed at overcoming this year’s buckwheat deficit. The provided seeds will help farmers plant about 2 500 hectares in western and central Ukraine. The yield from this area will be at least 2 tonnes per hectare, or 5,000 tonnes of buckwheat grain.

Contributions from the EU were made at the request of the Ministry, as two containers were stuck in a port in Germany due to lack of funds. A total of €9,000 was transferred to cover this urgent shortfall.
