EU condemns kidnapping of Ukrainian mayors
The EU has strongly condemned the kidnapping of the mayors of Melitopol and Dniprorudne by Russian armed forces.
“It is yet another attack on democratic institutions in Ukraine and an attempt to establish illegitimate alternative government structures in a sovereign country,” EU High Representative Josep Borrell tweeted today.
In a separate tweet, European Council President Charles Michel said “Such abductions and other pressure on Ukraine’s local authorities are another blatant violation of international law.”
“Russia’s military and political aggression against Ukraine must stop.”
Yesterday, the EU’s Committee of the Regions had called for the immediate release of the mayor of Melitopol. “The abduction of a democratically elected Mayor is an act of terrorism not only against the citizens of Melitopol, but also all local government in Europe,” said CoR President Apostolos Tzitzikostas in a declaration.
