EU clears mines from 72 hectares of land in Luhansk region

A total of 72 hectares of land cleared of landmines, 118 new jobs, and safe and available water in the Luhansk region of Eastern Ukraine – these are main results ofthe EU-funded project on ‘Revitalising frontline communities through humanitarian de-mining and livelihood support’. The project, implemented by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), presented it outcomes on 16 September in Lysychansk.

During the project’s implementation from January 2020 to September 2021, €2 million were contributed to the Humanitarian Mine Action, as well as economic and infrastructural rehabilitation in Luhansk region. The main activities took place in Troitske, Novotoshkivske, Muratove, Komyshuvakha, Trokhizbenka, Hirske, and Zolote.

Under the project, a further 8,112,830 square metres in 11 settlements were identified as still contaminated with explosives, and awareness of the dangers was raised among more than 2,000 local residents.

DRC also supported local businesses in creating 118 new jobs by providing entrepreneurs with cash grants for agricultural machinery, livestock, and other key elements of economic ventures. In addition, 10 community initiatives on infrastructural development were implemented, building youth centres, repairing kindergartens and community clubs, installing solar lights, etc.

DRC also helped renovate the borehole in Komyshuvakha, which was surrounded by explosive ordnance. The area was cleared of mines, the borehole was repaired, and water-dependent businesses received cash grants to restart their activities.
