EU anti-corruption initiative helps Ukrainian cities to cope with the aftermath of war

With the outbreak of war, the partners of the European Union Anti-Corruption Initiative (EUACI) in Ukraine have refocused their work on supporting internally displaced people in Ukraine.

With the help of EUACI, the NGO ‘Chernivtsi Youth Centre’, in cooperation with the city council, set up a humanitarian aid centre on the first day of the full-scale war. The centre has created accommodation for around 300 people and procured the necessary items: mattresses, blankets, pillows, food, medicines, fuel, towels, hygiene products, etc. According to Anastasia Golovchenko, co-founder of the centre, the NGO also created a social media platform where the necessary items could be requested and obtained with the help of volunteers.

In Chervonohrad, EUAСI helped the city deliver medical supplies, clothing, technical equipment, shoes, fuel and other necessary materials to IDPs, to the Lviv Regional State Administration and the Regional State Territorial Defence Administration. “For me, it was a huge support at that moment because all our groups, military forces and refugees, had many needs,” says Taras Havunka, advisor to the mayor of Chervonohrad. 

With the EUACI’s support, Zhytomyr received 15 diesel generators to power the city’s critical infrastructure, including hospitals, surgical wards and more. EUACI has also provided the city with thermal drones and radios for the city administration during martial law and is working with an NGO, Greenery, through which activists are organising housing for IDPs.
