Democracy here, democracy now: Young European Ambassadors join flagship Council of Europe youth event

Sixteen Young European Ambassadors (YEAs) are joining the Council of Europe’s Youth Action Week in Strasbourg. The week, from 27 June to 2 July, is the flagship event of the Council of Europe’s  (CoE) Democracy Here | Democracy Now youth campaign for revitalising democracy and strengthening mutual trust between young people and democratic institutions and processes.

Youth Action Week brings together activists, civil society, Council of Europe Member States and youth sector partners to strengthen the youth campaign for revitalising democracy and to mark 50th anniversary of the youth sector of the CoE.

Together with around 400 young people from all over Europe, the 16 YEAs from all six Eastern partner countries and the European Union, will discuss the challenges to democracy and their impacts on the youth.

As part of the event, EU NEIGHBOURS east and the Young European Ambassadors are running a joint social media campaign together with CoE youth channels, asking young people to have their say on democracy: “Help us to raise your voice and tell us about the challenges in your community, and leave a comment with your ideas for the improvement of democracy in your country!”

On Friday, 1 July, the YEAs will meet Ambassador Meglena Kuneva, the EU’s representative at the Council of Europe, presenting the YEA project and the work of the network.

On the occasion of Youth Action Week, the Young European Ambassadors are also publishing the second edition of the YEA Magazine, with a focus on youth participation for a healthy and democratic society.

The YEAs initiative is a voluntary network connecting young people from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and the EU Member States and the United Kingdom. The aim of the network is to raise awareness about the EU’s cooperation with its Eastern partner countries, showcase the tangible results of this cooperation, contribute to policy dialogue on various topics, help increase civic activism and work together for a better future.
