Borrell: EU diplomatic missions to Ukraine are not closing

The EU diplomatic missions to Ukraine are not closing, EU High Representative Josep Borrell said on 13 February, in a Declaration issued on behalf of the EU diplomatic presence in Kyiv:  “They remain in Kyiv and continue to operate in support of EU citizens and in cooperation with the Ukrainian authorities.”

“The EU and its member states are coordinating their actions in view of the current threats on Ukraine,” says the Declaration. “Staff presence and travel advice to EU citizens are being adjusted as necessary to take into account security circumstances.”

Borrell reaffirmed the EU’s continued support to Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and diplomatic efforts towards de-escalation, and recalled that any further military aggression against Ukraine would have massive consequences and severe cost in response.

Earlier, on 11 February, Borrell announced that he had sent a letter to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov responding to his written message to each EU member state on 28 January. In his letter, Borrell reiterates the EU’s and its Member States’ offer to continue dialogue with Russia on ways to strengthen the security of all. He also underlined that the EU has a common foreign and security policy: “Our aim is to act united on all issues of key common interest. Only those who are interested in dividing us, would question such a decision.
