Azerbaijan receives first batch of vaccines from EU-supported COVAX facility

On 4 April, 84,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines against COVID-19 arrived in Azerbaijan as part of the COVAX initiative, which is supported by the EU.

“EU contributions made the development and production of these vaccines and their delivery to Azerbaijan possible today,” said the Head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan Kestutis Jankauskas at the airport to welcome the shipment. “AstraZeneca is a safe and effective vaccine approved by the European Medicine Agency…Thanks to COVAX and Team Europe, people in Azerbaijan will now have a choice of vaccines. We encourage people to get vaccinated! This is the best way to beat COVID!”

Azerbaijan plans to import 432,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine by late May and 218,790 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine within eight weeks.

The European Union is one of the biggest supporters of COVAX, a global collaboration to accelerate the development, production, and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines. The EU’s Team Europe (which combines resources from the EU, its Member States and European financial institutions) supports COVAX with more than €2.2 billion, including €1 billion from the EU budget.
